ENDLESS LOVE

SINOPSIS:

Those who don’t recall 1981 romantic drama Endless Love – somewhat dubiously taglined “The Greatest Love Story of All Time” – might need a bit of a push to get excited for the upcoming remaking from director Shana Weste (Country Strong). Well, the orginal movie received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song, and the remake stars Alex Pettyfer in a role that might have him taking his clothes off almost as much as he did in Magic Mike.

Pettyfer plays a bad influence by the name of David, who is two whole years older than shy bookworm Jade (Gabriella Wilde), whom he meets when her family comes to stay at the inn where David works as a valet. After a joyride and some longing gazes they’re soon making sweet love in front of a roaring fireplace while subtitles warn the audience to, “Say goodbye to innocence.”

At least, that’s what can be garnered about the plot from the new trailer for Endless Love, which arrived online today courtesy of MTV. Don’t be fooled by the Mills and Boon set-up or the shots of the young couple romantically prancing through meadows and flashing their underwear at each other, though; Endless Love has a serious side to it. The love between Jade and David is as dangerous as it is passionate, sparking the disapproval of Jade’s father (Bruce Greenwood) and ultimately turning their relationship into an “obsessive, dark, and disastrous” affair.

Much of the the trouble comes in the form of Jade’s father digging into David’s past in order to uncover the kind of unsavory details that will hopefully keep the lower-class rapscallion away from his daughter for good, and from David retaliating in a desperate attempt to win back his one true love. We won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen the original film or read the novel by Scott Spencer, but Endless Love has its fair share of tragedy mixed into the romance.

While a lot of the frames in this trailer could easily serve as the cover of an erotic romance novel and the Endless Love remake doesn’t look much better than the 1981 version, it’s probably OK to live and let live with this film. Some people enjoy bad horror movies, others love cheesy sci-fi, and then there are people who love to get engrossed in stories of searing romance – the more melodramatic the better. More power to them, but I’ll probably be giving Endless Love a miss this time around.
